About the Story
The Vegetarian is a haunting and surreal novel that tells the story of Yeong-hye, an ordinary woman living in South Korea, who, after a series of disturbing dreams, makes the decision to stop eating meat. Her seemingly simple choice unleashes a profound and disturbing chain of events that disrupt her family’s lives.
The novel is divided into three parts, each narrated from a different character's perspective, examining the repercussions of Yeong-hye's decision. First, her husband narrates his confusion and frustration as his wife refuses to conform to societal expectations. Then, her brother-in-law becomes obsessed with Yeong-hye, drawn to her growing sense of detachment and transformation. Finally, Yeong-hye’s sister confronts the unraveling of her family and her own identity.
As Yeong-hye’s rejection of meat turns into a deeper rejection of society, conformity, and her own body, the novel explores themes of identity, desire, and the consequences of defying social norms. The Vegetarian challenges readers with its dark, lyrical exploration of mental illness, autonomy, and the nature of violence.
